The VBMA will have a full schedule of classes and workshops throughout the Winter Term, available both weekdays and weekends. A variety of five- and ten-week sessions will be available in a wide array of mediums and topics.

Instructors
VBMA instructors are experienced teachers with rich education and studio backgrounds in addition to being professional artists. Full bios are available on the VBMA’s website.

Materials
Tuition does not cover the cost of materials used for students’ own production unless stated otherwise. Materials lists for each course or workshop are available on the website.

Cancellations
Courses are canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. If a course is canceled, the VBMA will inform students one week in advance to offer a refund or a transfer to another course.

Guest Policy
We regret that we are unable to accommodate guests in any art studio, humanities, or film.

Waiting Lists
Waiting lists are maintained for all filled classes. Please contact the VBMA to be placed on the waiting list. No deposit is necessary to hold a space.

Class Refund Policy
For multi-week classes, refund requests must be made through the education department within the first week of class. A $25 administrative fee will be assessed on all refunds.

NEW All Roads Lead to Rome: Ancient Roman Art and Archaeology

Explore the world of ancient Rome, including architectural and engineering wonders like the Pantheon, the aqueducts, and the Colosseum; beautiful paintings of villa gardens; and marble sculptures of stunning realism. From the palaces of emperors to the lost cities of Vesuvius, from the glories of Rome as a great city to the mysterious frontier provinces of England and Egypt, this is grand tour through classical art and archaeology.

NEW French Impressionism

This course is designed to enhance students’ appreciation and enjoyment of the VBMA’s exhibition French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950. Featuring gallery visits, the instructor will discuss the work of Monet, Morisot, Renoir, Corot, Manet, Degas, Caillebotte, and Cezanne.
This course will take a journey from the café society of Paris to the gardens of Giverny, all from the comfort of the Museum.

NEW Fabuleux Modernisme Français: Impressionism to Surrealism

Inspired by VBMA’s exhibition French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950, this class will explore the Parisian world of exhilarating new art ‘isms that shocked and delighted. Discover the impetus and impacts that led, in short order, to Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. The creative culmination brought new art stars to the fore while drenching the art world in a kaleidoscope of colors and patterns. Short videos enrich the conversation.

NEW Re-Viewing: Themes from the VBMA Collection

Taking a cue from the VBMA’s painting and sculpture collections, this class will explore vital themes through the work of key artists, the language of abstraction, look of animals, presence of people, and pride of place. Works by Butterfield, Dine, Otterness, Pfaff, and more, show an evolution of styles and interests. By delving into these universal themes there is sure to be a fresh take on what is on view in the Museum. Short engaging videos bring new perspectives to the conversation.

NEW Impressionism Light: An Introduction to French Impressionism

What is Impressionism? Why is it so beloved a style? What should one look for when visiting the VBMA’s exhibition French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950? This five-week course is designed to answer those questions, giving students an engaging and exciting introduction to the work of Monet and his friends. CONTEMPLATIVE ARTS

Chair Yoga

Students will enjoy an invigorating yoga practice with a slight modification – the chair is the ‘ground.’ Students will employ this everyday prop to take them through the range of motion for a full body workout that will include forward bends, backbends, and spinal twists for flexibility; standing and balancing poses to build stability and core strength; and breathing techniques for body awareness and stress reduction.

Qigong

Qigong is an 8,000-year-old movement program that exercises the body as a whole. With over 9,000 variations, it is the parent form for Tai Chi, Kung Fu, acupuncture, acupressure, and Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping). Qigong is known as the Longevity Exercise. No special equipment required.

Art of the Tai Chi Form

The art of tai chi feeds body, mind, and spirit. In this course, students will learn a series of forms that focus on balance, health, and well-being. A combination of brief lecture and practice, sessions will include opening the energy gate exercises for body, 18-step Qigong for mindfulness, and 24-step tai chi moving meditation for flow of spirit.

WRITING/ILLUSTRATION

NEW Planning the Plot-Driven Novel

This class is for students who have an idea for a novel or have a draft they would like to rethink, or who are curious whether novel-writing is right for them. Students will decide what kind of novel they would like to write, who the main characters are, and what conflict drives the story. Voice, stakes, structure, and character transformation will all be covered. Students will write in class and share their work with others. NEW Children’s Book Illustration

Students will explore the art of illustration through character design and visual storytelling. They will work from song lyrics, literature, nursery rhymes, and more. Stuart Segal Scholarship for Photography Students
The Stuart Segal Scholarship is dedicated to aiding aspiring photography students for whom attending class would otherwise be financially challenging. Cell Phone Photography

Students will learn how to get the most out of their phone’s camera while learning the basics of what makes a successful photograph. Class will touch on the history of photography and where it’s at today. Additionally, students will discover tips and tricks to enhance their mobile photography skills and learn about apps, sending and printing options and other skills to support successful mobile photography. CERAMICS

PLEASE NOTE: MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES FOR CERAMICS CLASSES
A 25-pound bag of clay is included in class tuition. Registered students may purchase up to two more bags of clay from the instructor during the duration of each course. Only clay provided by the Museum may be used in class or fired in the Museum’s kilns. All tools and materials are the responsibility of the students and are generally introduced through a supply list on the website under the class description, or during the first class of the term.

NEW Introduction to Hand Building and Beyond

In this exciting hand-building class, participants will learn all aspects of working with clay slabs, coils, and pinch pots. This class is great for beginners who are looking for a creative outlet and returning students who wish to advance to more complex techniques. Students will learn about surface decorations, how to add sprigs to forms to be able to customize and personalize. Both sculptural and functional forms will be addressed. Advanced Ceramics Studio

Throw Like a Pro

This class provides an intensive immersion in wheel throwing. Students grow their skills and will learn shortcuts to successfully make pots on the wheel. Weekly demonstrations will cover basic forms, such as cups and bowls, and will move on to advanced forms such as tall vases and larger forms. Figure and Portrait Sculpture

Students will develop a proficiency in figurative and portrait sculpture. Working in water-based clay and from a live model, students will create two figures and one portrait. The instructor will introduce principles of anatomy, gesture, and proportion as well as the intricacies of the hands, feet and facial features. GLASS

Translucent Trerasures: Creations with Glass

Adam Conard
All levels
In this class, students will learn some very basic glass working skills as well as some unconventional ones to create both decorative and functional creations. This is a fireless class! The only heat used in this class will be from a soldering iron which is roughly the size and heat output of a standard glue gun. All levels are welcome to join and students may bring in any broken glass, sea glass, and other glass they may have. NEW Fashion Gone Live!

Students will explore today’s fashion through history, magazines, and celebrity trends. They’ll create fashion illustrations and transform them into fine art, moving from paper or board to canvas. T-shirts will be designed—removing color on black shirts and adding color on white ones. Students will also paint a denim item like jeans or a jacket, and customize a tote or used handbag with their own designs. NEW Creative Exploration: Mixed Media Layering with Acrylics

In this experimental painting class, students of all levels will explore the creative potential of using fast-drying acrylics as a base for layering various materials. NEW Tiny Treasures: Exploring Iconic Art

In this creative class, students will explore renowned artists like Monet, Matisse, Van Gogh, and Picasso through interactive demos and group activities. Each session introduces a variety of painting techniques, such as paint pouring and alcohol ink, while diving into the history of these iconic artists. How to Paint Like an Impressionist

In this class, students will learn how 19th-century French artists such as Claude Monet broke away from European traditions. They explored light and color in addition to changing the subject matter from formal portraits to the working class. The invention of the train brought artists out of dingy, smoky Paris to the sunny and colorful south of France. Pastel, oil, or acrylic is appropriate for this class—students’ choice. Watercolors and More on a Budget

to create wonderful paintings using budget friendly supplies. We’ll use techniques created by the instructor to show movement and motion which helps to bring the paintings to life. We’ll have fun creating happy accidents. Our subject matter will include still life, beach scenes, birds, and sailboats, along with abstract and expressionist styles. How to Paint a Landscape
