The VBMA will have a full schedule of classes and workshops throughout the Spring Term, available both weekdays and weekends. A variety of five- and ten-week sessions will be available in a wide array of mediums and topics.

VBMA instructors are experienced teachers with rich education and studio backgrounds in addition to being professional artists. Click here for instructor biographies.

Materials
Tuition does not cover the cost of materials used for students’ own production unless stated otherwise. Materials lists for each course or workshop are available on the website.

Cancellations
Courses are canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. If a course is canceled, the VBMA will inform students one week in advance to offer a refund or a transfer to another course.

Guest Policy
We regret that we are unable to accommodate guests in any art studio, humanities, or film class.

Waiting Lists
The Education Department maintains waiting lists for all filled classes. Please contact the VBMA to be placed on a waiting list. No deposit is necessary to hold a space.

Class Refund Policy
For multi-week classes, refund requests must be made through the Education Department within the first week of class. A $25 administrative fee will be assessed on all refunds.

NEW Nature in French Art

This course features gallery visits and is designed to enhance appreciation for the nature themes in the exhibit French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950. Learn about the background of nature in French art, from the colorful images of illuminated manuscripts and fables to the natural history studies of the Age of Enlightenment. Then we will see how Monet and his fellow Impressionists explored the beauty of nature in a new way with timeless garden scenes and landscapes.

NEW French Impressionism

This course is designed to enhance students’ appreciation and enjoyment of the VBMA’s exhibition French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950. Featuring gallery visits, the instructor will discuss the work of Monet, Morisot, Renoir, Corot, Manet, Degas, Caillebotte, and Cezanne. This course will take a journey from the café society of Paris to the gardens of Giverny, all from the comfort of the Museum.

NEW Fashion Forward: Dress & Drapery in Works of Art

VBMA’s exhibition, “Well-Dressed: Artworks from the Permanent Collection,” invites a long look at how artists present conceptual images and actual materials that convey the world of fashion. Drawn from museums near and far, paintings and sculptures from the past to the present uncover visual delights and hidden motivations. A diversity of artists and approaches from van Eyck to Judith Shea to Bisa Butler’s quilts, bring the intimacy of textiles to the fore. Short videos enrich the conversation.

NEW Miniature to Massive: Wee Wonders to Huge Installations

Tiny, vivid, and gem-like miniature works of art evoke worlds unto themselves that lead viewers into another realm. Three-dimensional sculpture confronts us fully realized with height, width, and depth. Starting with the wee world of painted and crafted miniatures and moving to sculpture in the round and contemporary gallery installations that incorporate entire spaces and everything in it, can challenge the viewer from all sides. A diversity of artists makes the case that size matters.

NEW Impressionism Light: An Introduction to French Impressionism

What is Impressionism? Why is it so beloved a style? What should one look for when visiting the VBMA’s exhibition French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950? This five-week course is designed to answer those questions, giving students an engaging and exciting introduction to the work of Monet and his friends. This will feature gallery visits to enhance students’ enjoyment of the exhibit, as the class learns the stories behind beautiful paintings while standing right in front of them!

CONTEMPLATIVE ARTS

Chair Yoga

Students will enjoy an invigorating yoga practice with a slight modification – the chair is the ‘ground.’ Students will employ this everyday prop to take them through the range of motion for a full body workout that will include forward bends, backbends, and spinal twists for flexibility; standing and balancing poses to build stability and core strength; and breathing techniques for body awareness and stress reduction.

Qigong

Qigong is an 8,000-year-old movement program that exercises the body as a whole. With over 9,000 variations, it is the parent form for Tai Chi, Kung Fu, acupuncture, acupressure, and Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping). Qigong is known as the Longevity Exercise. No special equipment required.

Art of the Tai Chi Form

The art of tai chi feeds body, mind, and spirit. In this course, students will learn a series of forms that focus on balance, health, and well-being. A combination of brief lecture and practice, sessions will include opening the energy gate exercises for body, 18-step Qigong for mindfulness, and 24-step tai chi moving meditation for flow of spirit.

Stuart Segal Scholarship for Photography Students
The Stuart Segal Scholarship is dedicated to aiding aspiring photography students for whom attending class would otherwise be financially challenging. CERAMICS

PLEASE NOTE: MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES FOR CERAMICS CLASSES
A 25-pound bag of clay is included in class tuition. Registered students may purchase up to two more bags of clay from the instructor during the duration of each course. Only clay provided by the Museum may be used in class or fired in the Museum’s kilns. All tools and materials are the responsibility of the students and are generally introduced through a supply list on the website under the class description, or during the first class of the term.

Introduction to Hand Building and Beyond

In this exciting hand-building class, participants will learn all aspects of working with clay slabs, coils, and pinch pots. This class is great for beginners who are looking for a creative outlet and returning students who wish to advance to more complex techniques. Students will learn about surface decorations, how to add sprigs to forms to be able to customize and personalize. Both sculptural and functional forms will be addressed. Advanced Ceramics Studio

Throw Like a Pro: Wheel Throwing

This class provides an intensive immersion in wheel throwing. Students grow their skills and will learn shortcuts to successfully make pots on the wheel. Weekly demonstrations will cover basic forms, such as cups and bowls, and will move on to advanced forms such as tall vases and larger forms. Introduction to Ceramics: Basic Wheel Techniques

Students learn the basics of wheel throwing during this beginner class. They will experiment with surface decoration, including carving, and discuss various glaze applications. Painting a Pet Portrait

In this course, students will learn to paint pet portraits from personal reference photos. The instructor will
demonstrate the painting technique and provide the tools commonly used for the process. Students should bring a
reference photo on the first day of class to begin transferring the image and executing the portrait. The course is open
to students with experience in their chosen medium, with the instructor working in pastels. A pet portrait is a
meaningful way to preserve a cherished memory or create a special gift!

How to Paint Like an Impressionist

In this class, students will learn how 19th-century French artists such as Claude Monet broke away from European traditions. They explored light and color in addition to changing the subject matter from formal portraits to the working class. The invention of the train brought artists out of dingy, smoky Paris to the sunny and colorful south of France. Pastel, oil, or acrylic is appropriate for this class—students’ choice. Watercolors and More on a Budget

to create wonderful paintings using budget friendly supplies. We’ll use techniques created by the instructor to show movement and motion which helps to bring the paintings to life. How to Paint a Landscape

The class will look at European artists and how they formed compositions, specifically landscapes. The focus will be on the French Impressionists and understanding perspective and diminishing colors to create depth in
