The VBMA has a full schedule of classes and workshops throughout the Fall Term, available both weekdays and weekends. A variety of five- and ten-week sessions will be available in a wide array of mediums and topics.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Registration Information
Classes from October 7 – December 15, 2024
Registration opens Monday, August 26, 2024
All registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Materials
Tuition does not cover the cost of materials used for students’ own production unless stated otherwise. Materials lists for each course or workshop are available when registering at the Museum; online registrants will receive an e-mail with any material lists, or they may download them from the website.
Cancellations
Courses are canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. If a course is canceled, the Vero Beach Museum of Art will inform students to offer a refund or a transfer to another course.
Guest Policy
We regret that we are unable to accommodate guests in any art studio, humanities, or film.
Waiting Lists
Waiting lists are maintained for all filled classes. Please contact the VBMA to be placed on the waiting list. No deposit is necessary to hold a space.
Refunds
Requests for refunds are made through the education department during the first week
of class. Refunds after the first week will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
HUMANITIES
ART HISTORY AND ART APPRECIATION
NEW! SILVER OWLS AND THE WINE-DARK SEA: ART AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE ANCIENT GREEK WORLD

Students will learn about the seafaring Minoans with their beautiful nature art and the Mycenaean warriors with their great citadels. They will discover the Golden Age of Athens, including the Parthenon, the sculptures of Phidias, and the traditions of Greek ceramics. This class will explore the Greek colonies of Asia Minor, where Wonders of the World could be found, and of southern Italy, where ancient temples still stand in Sicily and at Paestum. Finally, they will see how Alexander the Great affected art history and world history.

CONTEMPLATIVE ARTS
CHAIR YOGA
Elise Mahovlich
All levels
Students will enjoy an invigorating yoga practice with a slight modification – the chair is the ‘ground.’ Students will employ this everyday prop to take them through the range of motion for a full body workout that will include forward bends, backbends, and spinal twists for flexibility; standing and balancing poses to build stability and core strength; and breathing techniques for body awareness and stress reduction.

QIGONG
Katie Nall
All levels
Qigong is an 8,000-year-old movement program that exercises the body as a whole. With over 9,000 variations, it is the parent form for Tai Chi, Kung Fu, acupuncture, acupressure, and Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping). Qigong is known as the Longevity Exercise. No special equipment required.

ART OF THE TAI CHI FORM
John Walcott

The art of Tai Chi feeds body, mind, and spirit.
In this course students will learn a series of forms that focus on balance, health, and well-being. A combination of brief lecture and practice sessions will include opening the energy gate exercises for body, Qigong and Tai Chi Qigong for mindfulness, and 24-step Yang style Tai Chi form meditation for flow of spirit.

PHOTOGRAPHY
The STUART SEGAL SCHOLARSHIP is dedicated to aiding aspiring photography students for whom attending class would otherwise be financially challenging. The scholarship will pay tuition fees for any photography class offered via the VBMA’s Museum Art School. Click here for more information and application.
NEW! DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY ESSENTIALS: CAPTURE EVERY MOMENT LIKE A PRO

This course will explore five different kinds of photography: Landscape, Street, Portrait, Food, and Abstract. All levels are welcome. Digital camera and lens required, access to a laptop with Adobe Creative Cloud, or Lightroom is a plus.

CERAMICS
PLEASE NOTE: MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES FOR CERAMICS CLASSES
A 25-pound bag of clay is included in class tuition. Registered students may purchase up to two more bags of clay from the instructor during the duration of each course. Only clay provided by the Museum may be used in class or fired in the Museum’s kilns. All tools and materials are the responsibility of the students and are generally introduced through a supply list on the website under the class description, or during the first class of the term. WORKING WITH CLAY

All levels
Open to beginners through advanced students, this class includes both hand building and wheel throwing. Beginners learn the basics, while returning students work on perfecting their techniques. The instructor covers surface decoration, design, and glazing instruction, and will also employ helpful class critiques.

THROW LIKE A PRO

This class provides an intensive immersion in wheel-throwing for students of all skill levels. Beginners will learn shortcuts to successfully make pots on the wheel, while students with previous experience can grow their skills. Weekly demonstrations will cover basic forms such as cups and bowls and will move on to advanced forms such as tall vases and larger
forms. Instruction on glazing techniques will round out the course, allowing students to finish pieces to take home and enjoy.

ADVANCED CERAMICS STUDIO

Advanced level
This studio course is geared to the student who is motivated to undertake ambitious individual work in clay and further their understanding of ceramic art. The goal is to provide the advanced student the opportunity to grow and to produce desired but previously unattainable work. Student work will reflect well thought out and executed projects, including aesthetic decisions, an increased ability to handle material, and an increased proficiency with glazing techniques.

GLASS
NEW! TRANSLUCENT TREASURES – CREATIONS WITH GLASS

All levels
In this class, students will learn some very basic glass working skills as well as some unconventional ones to create both decorative and functional creations. This is a fireless class! The only heat used in this class will be from a soldering iron which is roughly the size and heat output of a standard glue gun. All levels are welcome to join and students may bring in any broken glass, sea glass, and other glass they may have. Some glass in an array of beautiful colors will be available for the dazzling and luminous creations. DRAWING
YOU CAN DRAW

Beginner level
This course will ensure that beginning students learn to see shapes, understand shadows, and use lines in powerful or delicate ways. Students learn to use their drawing tools properly and confidently and will be amazed at their steady progress as they learn to design and compose their projects. PASTELS – MORE THAN JUST DRAWING

PAINTING
NEW! HOW TO PAINT LIKE AN IMPRESSIONIST

In this class, students will learn how 19th-century French artists such as Claude Monet broke away from European traditions. They explored light and color in addition to changing the subject matter from formal portraits to the working class. The invention of the train brought artists out of dingy, smoky Paris to the sunny and colorful south of France. Pastel, oil, or acrylic is appropriate for this class—students’ choice. Students will work from

This class takes a deep dive into creating successful oil paintings including choosing the right supplies, creating depth, tone, and value and setting up the canvas. Students will go over the rich and vibrant history of oil painting and how it is being used today. Whether a seasoned oil painter, new to painting, or have been painting in other mediums, this class will have a lot to offer. PET PORTRAITS

All levels
Artists have painted portraits of their pets for centuries. Students have the opportunity to immortalize theirs with a painting or create a wonderful gift. Students will learn several drawing techniques while working from a photo of a chosen pet. Any medium students are comfortable working in is acceptable. SELF EXPRESSION THROUGH ABSTRACT PAINTING

This course is an introduction to various styles and techniques of non-representational, abstract painting. Topics include Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, Geometric Abstraction, and Hard-Edge painting. A series of individual projects in oil or acrylic media will explore artistic techniques and concepts incorporating elements of line, shape, form, color, tone, and texture. HOW TO PAINT A LANDSCAPE

The class will look at European artists and how they formed compositions, specifically landscapes. The focus will be on the French Impressionists and understanding perspective and diminishing colors to create depth in a painting. Students can choose their own medium. BIG BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL

Students will paint in acrylics with the instructor using exciting techniques to create a painting during each class. The expressionist style of painting will be used for very vibrant color and freedom of movement in painting. This is the class for students who have paintings crying out to “FINISH ME!” Students may also bring in a family photo or a famous work of art that they have always wanted to paint. Another option is to bring in outdated artwork or bunch of memorabilia that can all be turned into a great work of art.
