Jaume Plensa’s Yorkshire Soul III, 2010

Jaume Plensa’s stainless-steel sculpture Yorkshire Soul III depicts a seated figure whose silhouette is formed by symbols from different writing systems; the piece is a beautiful reflection of the artist’s interest in the way this medium can show the messages he aims to express through his work. An acclaimed Spanish artist focused on public art, Plensa has pieces around the world and is deeply respected internationally.  In an interview with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, he said about his work: “It’s a beautiful metaphor for community, about society.” When constructing his pieces, he considers the environment surrounding his works and the individual’s connection to the piece. He uses letters from multiple languages from around the world including Latin, Greek, Arabic, Chinese, and many more. While there are no legible texts formed by the combinations of the letters and symbols, a different meaning emerges. “Unity is a common theme in most of his works, “we all share the same blood” he said in an interview with the VMFA Artist Profile: Jaume Plensa (youtube.com). While looking into the hollowness of the figure, he wants us to know that he intends for our bodies to be the soul of his works. This beautiful message is something everyone can connect with and cherish. When you get the chance, go visit our sculpture park to see this piece for yourselves!
